An excerpt from my work in progress
If you’ve been reading my posts and emails, you know that I’m tackling the challenge of writing a Regency romance—something I’ve never before done. I’m fascinated by the period, the social environment, and especially how women of the haute ton navigated the restrictions imposed on them.
Today, I’m sharing a chapter that features my principal secondary character, Lady Mariana Lanyon, sister of Viscount Bridlington, who is the male protagonist.
What I discover as I write, conscious of the conventions and tropes of Regency romance, is that I can’t entirely leave behind my historical fiction roots. I have a need to incorporate the wider history into the story, to make a point that concerns that history as well as fulfilling the requirements of a true romance.
So, for my paid subscribers, here is Lady Mariana toward the beginning of the story. Apologies for the telling and backstory: this is an early draft!
And if you want to work alongside me in four workshops during April, I invite you to sign up for the Historical Romance Virtual Intensive! Find out more about it on my website.
